The 7 cardinal sins of any eCommerce site
Online shoppers are much less forgiving than a web store owner might like – or realize, for that matter. And you can’t necessarily blame them. The reason that consumers choose to purchase items online is, after all, for the sheer convenience of it.
So no matter the issue, if it’s not easy for a shopper to make a purchase, they’ll exit out of your site and they might not ever return. According to the editors at Mashable.com, the following seven deadly sins, so to speak, have the potential to send customers fleeing in horror from your website:
- Your site is too slow – Patience is a virtue, but not when it comes to online shopping. Consumers don’t want to wait for your site to load – nor will they.
- Your site is too complicated – If it takes more than five clicks to make a purchase, you’re bound to lose the sale.
- Your credit card entry system is punishing – Borrow, buy or steal established best practices. Online shoppers get used to standard methods of making a purchase, so if you decide to reinvent the wheel, they’re bound to be frustrated or confused.
- You’re charging too much for shipping – Point blank: Don’t charge more than 10 percent for shipping. Anything more is just too much.
- You’re overselling your tablet app – It’s recommended to optimize your site for iPad users. It’s not, however, suggested that you shove your iPad app down their throat.
- Your site performs horribly on certain browsers – Test the functionality of your site across all browsers. And then test it again.
- You’re hitting your customers with irrelevant offers – Once a customer has made a purchase, some might feel inclined to send them product offers via e-mail. The key here, though, is to not bombard them with those offers.
If you’ve committed any of these sins, there's no need to worry. You haven’t been damned to a life of low conversion rates or limited online revenue. You will, however, need to repent for your actions by correcting the situation.
